  1. I know that DIBELS is on everyone's mind. BUT if we could truly "Ignite the Passion for Reading" I think that we would also see the benefits in the DIBELS results. I would really love to put the "Reading Lounge" idea in action at MCES. Or perhaps something very similar. We have done the author visits a few times here. Jerry Pallotta was one of my favorites.

    1. I think you are correct Diana. I think if we just get kids excited about reading and reading a large volume of books both fiction and nonfiction that DIBELS would take care of itself. :)

  2. Diana, I agree that the "Reading Lounge" would be a great addition to our school. Space is a real issue at our place. If you have any creative or innovative location ideas, please share!

  3. Chapters 7-10 provided many interesting ideas to promote reading. The Elementary Cafe' is an idea I think we could implement. Instead of having the cafe' time before school we would have it during lunch. We would set up a special cafe' area and allow students to enjoy a read aloud as they also enjoyed lunch. Another interesting idea was "Poetry Breaks". The week prior to Christmas we held a "Winter Read In." Our 7th and 8th grade student hosted a poetry coffee house. Students were allowed to drink cocoa and share their favorite poetry or their own original poetry.

    1. Janice that is also a great idea especially for a student incentive. I'm thinking even a breakfast club cafe.

  4. What a neat idea, Janice. I too had thought about the cafe brainstorm, but not so much in the lunchroom during lunch. That's something to consider. I like your ideas about poetry too, especially since poetry seems that it may be a hot topic on the ARMT+. AND you are right about the location for all these wonderful thoughts. I approached my librarian about the idea. We're looking into a few possiblilities.

  5. Wow! I read this chapter just in time. A reading lounge is the perfect way to express to students the importance of reading. Our art teacher just moved out of a classroom that is central in our building. It doesn't have two doors but it is located close to the library. I'm thinking this is a great place for teachers and student to have a great place to get away and read. Now to put this plan into action a little bit at a time. I love books and blogging because I get some amazing ideas. My inner voice is telling me there are lots of places and people that are feeling the need to clean their attics, closets, furniture stores, and carpets warehouses to help a poor little country school prosper in the area of reading.

  6. We are supposed to be creating an area at our school to honor a teacher who died last year. I am reminded to check on the progress of the project. I know that I relax when I read. So, why wouldn't we want to provide our students with the same incentive and enjoyment.
