Chapters 1-3 Igniting A Passion For Reading

During the next few weeks read chapters 1-3 in the book Igniting A Passion For Reading.  Then post 3 things that stood out to you as you read the chapters.  Read the post made by other coaches and try to comment on at least 2 post.  Hopefully, we will create a helpful dialogue about the book. Let's try to get our first posts and comments completed by Sept. 30.

  1. Mrs. Henshaw is a former reading coach from Madison City Schools. I am excited that she is willing to join our discussion. Ginger introduced me to the book we are reading.

  5. I am absolutely loving this book. The three things that stood out to me were:

    (1) It seems not to be a concern by many whether or not students actually enjoy reading. People assume kids like/love reading based on their level of fluency, comprehension, and test scores. The reality is that outside of school many kids never read because they simply don't like it.
    (2) Some educators have failed to find out the interest of their students through the use of interest inventories. Interest inventories allow students to express their desires and allow teachers/coaches to peek inside their world.
    (3) The percentage of Americans who read for pleasure was an alarming statistic to me. Why are we not reading as a Nation? If kids don't see modeling at home, why would they want to read?

  6. That is a good question Yo :) It makes me think about our Metacognition training with Janet when we asked a similar question about teachers. Are teachers readers? And if not, how will they model for studetns what they themselves do not practice?

  7. I think with the way technology entertains students these days there really isn't time to generate a love for reading like there use to be. We are fighting a losing battle by trying to generate a love of reading during the ARI block. I have heard more teachers say that their kids will just not read. So, let's figure out a way to get them to loving reading through technology. Right!

  8. Three ideas that stood out to me are...
    1. The idea of dramatically impacting the lives of students by putting them in touch with the right books. Some students simply need us to direct them down the "love of reading" path. It would be so easy and so wonderful to do, yet we often let distractions keep us from doing this.
    2. The idea of a complete reader. I found it very interesting that the pie chart of the complete reader equally divided mechanics with interest. It is true if a student has the skill and not the will, then they are essentially struggling as if it were reversed.
    3. The idea of goal setting and how it is only motivating when the people setting the goals are the same people who will be working to make them successful. Also, I thought it was a neat idea to set reading goals for ourselves right along with the students. What a great opportunity for meaningful conversations and making connections with the kids.
